Do I Need Root Canal Therapy?

May 25, 2021 6:46 pm

No one ever wants to get root canal therapy, but when you need it, you shouldn’t waste time seeking dental treatment in order to protect your smile. That begs the question: When would you need a root canal? While only a dentist can make the necessary diagnosis on that, there are some common symptoms to look out for that show you might need root canal therapy. If you notice any of the following signs, we recommend seeking out a dental professional.

Pain & Sensitivity

One of the most common symptoms in patients who require a root canal is dental pain. For some people, this pain might come and go, and for other people, the pain is persistent. This discomfort can also occur within the tooth, in the gums, or you may feel it throughout your jaw or face.

Aside from tooth pain, another sensation many people experience is tooth sensitivity. Whenever they eat or drink something very hot or very cold, they may experience a dull, uncomfortable sensation all the way to severe pain.

Visual Cues

In addition to what you might feel, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on how your teeth and gums look to notice if anything is off. When a tooth becomes severely infected, it can change color to a grayish-black. This happens because the infection has caused damage to the internal tissue.

Another visual sign that you might need root canal therapy is a pimple-like bump on your gums, which we call a gum boil or abscess. It’s not pretty, but sometimes this pimple can also release pus.
